18.10.2007 University Square name competition results
The results of the competition for the names of the three University of Iceland buildings under construction have been announced. The three buildings will house various functions. The building known thus far as Háskólatorg I (University Square I) will house a number of student service organisations, while University Square II will largely be dedicated to departmental offices, faculty and student workspace, and research facilities. The third building links the first two to one another.
The naming competition was open to all faculty and students of the University of Iceland and Iceland University of Education, as well as the staff of Icelandic Student Services. Over 3,000 entries containing more than 1,600 different proposals were received. The results of the competition were announced at a ceremony held in the new buildings.
Háskólatorg I has been given the name Háskólatorg (University Square). A total of 15 entrants proposed this name, and Gunnar Páll Baldvinsson’s name was drawn at random from among them. Háskólatorg II (University Square II) will be named Gimli, to honour the link with the West Icelanders who established the Eimskip University Fund. Ásdís Magnúsdóttir’s name was drawn from the three proposals of this name. The building linking Gimli and Háskólatorg will bear the name Tröd, which was suggested by 10 participants. Óskar Einarsson’s name was drawn from this group.
Together, the new buildings – Háskólatorg, Gimli, and Tröd – are roughly 8,500 m2 in size. They will be dedicated on 1 December 2007.
