In the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean, Iceland Prime Contractor has led a group of companies in equipping all of the Seychelles primary schools with computers.

The project has been underway for over two years, and a number of technologists and teachers have travelled to the Seychelles to provide instruction in the use of the equipment. In all, over 500 computers have been set up in the islands’ schools, all of them equipped with Icelandic educational software.

Among corporate and institutional sponsors of the project are Skýrr, Opin Kerfi, Glitnir, Síminn, Microsoft, UNESCO, the National Centre for Educational Materials (Námsgagnastofnun), Kaupthing, Eimskip, the City of Reykjavík, the City of Hafnarfjördur, Nýherji, Ískraft, Klaedning, Og Svo ehf., Monstro, Byggingafélagid Bakki, Hladbaer-Colas, Holraesahreinsun, Ísar hf., and others. Sponsors from the Seychelles are the Seychelles Ministry of Education, Air Seychelles, and Cable & Wireless.

The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reported on the project in its television news broadcast yesterday, 4 September, and in the television station programme Spotlight (Kastljós), which aired immediately after the news.

June 2006: The first group of technicians to travel to the Seychelles.
