Excavation for electrical line project complete

IPC will soon have finished laying the 132kV electrical lines for Reykjavík Energy (OR), a project the Company began in mid-September 2007. Excavation for the project is already complete. The lines will be a total of approximately 10.2 km long and will lie between the substations at Korpa and Borgartún Street. Electronic communications lines will be laid at the same time. The project, which has proceeded exceptionally smoothly, included drilling and laying lines beneath 14 streets, plus the Ellidaár river.

IPC is handling all administration and groundwork for the project, including excavation of loose and fixed materials. The contracting firm Raektunarsamband Flóa og Skeida acted as subcontractor for the drilling of exploratory wells, which yielded information that proved valuable in determining how the electrical lines should be laid beneath the Ellidaár riverbed. Five exploratory wells, each 10-20 metres deep, were dug near the river. Línuborun ehf. acted as subcontractor for the directional drilling and the laying of pull-through casings beneath the riverbed and traffic structures. Drilling took place in 14 locations beneath traffic structures, in addition to the drilling beneath the river. With this project, drilling into bedrock beneath a riverbed was carried out for the first time in Iceland. OR will lay the electrical and electronic communications lines and connect them.

Some 20 employees have worked on the project, which is scheduled for completion on 31 October 2008.
