The elegant new building at the Glaesibaer commercial and office complex houses a wide range of health care services. In March 2006, Iceland Prime Contractor began construction of the eight-storey, 10,000-m² building and its two-storey basement. In addition, the Company built a three-storey, 400-space parking garage between the new annex and the original Glaesibaer Shopping Centre building.

In November, tenants received the keys to the third and fourth floors of the new building, which are roughly 2,400 m² in size. IPC installed the interior fixtures for the physicians whose facilities are on these two floors. On the third floor are Laeknamidstödin ehf., with 26 examining rooms and two operating rooms with accompanying disinfecting rooms, and Blódrannsóknir ehf., a haematology laboratory. On the fourth floor is Handlaeknastödin ehf., with five state-of-the-art operating rooms plus ancillary facilities, in the nation’s largest surgical suite outside the National – University Hospital. Also on the fourth floor are dental examination rooms for paediatric dentists and four conventional medical examining rooms. The physicians have already begun using the new facilities.

Other activities in the building include the Hreyfing fitness centre and the Blue Lagoon Spa on the three lowest floors, the offices of the office supply company Penninn on another storey, and the ophthalmology centre Sjónlag ehf., on the fifth floor. Sjónlag’s facilities include two state-of-the-art operating rooms, one used primarily for cataract operations and the other for laser surgery. The top two floors have not yet been leased.
