KEFLAVÍK AIRPORT - Renewal of two 3 km runways

The project was to renew both runways, 3 km long each (No: 01-19 and 10-28) at the Keflavik airport by milling the surface and laying out new asphalt, renewing all electrical conduit pipes (PE pipes), installing cables and shallow bases for the lights in the runways and installing concrete bases for side lights.

IAV dug trenches along the sides of the runways, supplied and installed electrical conduit pipes and manholes in the trenches. IAV also milled groves in the asphalt to the centerline of the runways and installed electrical conduit and cables in these groves. IAV installed deep concrete bases for the lights along the sides of the runways and shallow bases for the runway lights at the center of the runways. IAV executed all earthwork necessary to finish fully strips for taxiing the planes or RETs (Rapid exit taxiways). The strips were also widened. IAV finished all earthwork for the electrical conduit system, supplied and installed this system and manholes, built from concrete the supports for landing lights on 01 and 28 and finished the electrical conduits for these lights.

Existing groves in the asphalt were milled away and the runways were milled to the correct level and tilt under the new asphalt. On top, a minimum 45 mm fully compact asphalt was laid over both runways.

IAV with their subcontractor Colas set up an asphalt mixing station within the fence of the Keflavik airport. Our subcontractor Colas supplied all the material necessary to produce the asphalt, produced it and laid it all out.
