Main Road #2 - South Iceland
IAV handle the widening of the Suðurlandvegur(part of highway nr. 1) road between Hveragerði and Selfoss. The project is called Biskupstungnabraut - Hveragerði, Stage 2 of Biskupstungnabraut - Gljúfurholtsá.
The project consists of a new part of the Circular Road and partial widening and restoration, a total of about 7.1 km. A new intersection will be made at Kirkjuferjuveg and Hvammsveg east, along with a new roundabout at Biskupstungnabraut. A new road approximately 5 km called Ölfusvegur with lanes for bicycles will be laid along with a changes to Þórustaðavegur and Biskupstungnabraut roads.
Three new bridges will be built on Gljúfurholtsá and Bakkárholtsá, subways for cars at Þórustað and Kotströnd, where Ölfusvegur goes under the main road. Two new subways for horse riding and hiking will be built.
Also there will be included in the project changes to the underground pipe lines.
The construction will also create a new continuous side road, Ölfusvegur, with special lanes for bicycles from Hveragerði to Biskupstungnabraut.
