Harpa - carpark and square
The pertinent car park to Harpa is about 19.000 m2 on two levels and contains 545 parking places. The car park is a subsea construction and therefore all sealing's were of outermost importance. Due to the water uplift the car park is anchored down with 500 12-17 m long anchors. The design emphasised bright open spaces with good ceiling height and few load bearing components to maintain good visibility and traffic flow. The roof and the intermediate plate are made of bubble decks which reduced construction time and the own weight of the construction which results in longer spans between columns.
The square in front of Harpa is divided into 3 spaces, the access to Harpa, a multiuse square and place to stay for a longer period to enjoy the environment in good weather. The design of the square reflects old history times when this area was a harbour area for small open fishing boats and the piers are imitated by the bridges over the ponds.
