Harpa

The Concert and Conference Centre at Austurhöfn has been given the name Harpa. This was made public at an official ceremony in the Centre to day. A ten year old girl, Harpa Karen Antonsdóttir gave the house its name. A competition for the name resulted in several thousand suggestions from whichthis one was selected.

Now it’s possible to see the first QB (Quasi Brick) hexagonal bricks that will form the south facade of the Concert and Conference Centre as they are being connected one by one.

Final blast at Bolungarvik tunnel

The final detonation at the Bolungarvik tunnel was blasted last Saturday by Kristján L. Möller, the Minister of Transport. Some 230 guests were assembled inside the tunnel so security measures had to be very high when the blast went off. In the evening the Ósafl employees, sub-contractors and guests celebrated in the mechanicalworkshop which had been transformed into a very nice club.

Safety first

As announced earlier, IAV is building an aluminium smelter in Helguvik, and now there are about 35 employees on the construction site. Safety requirements are very high and all employees must participate in a safety course prior to starting their work on site.

Tunnel work in Bolungarvik

Yesterday, the last blast before the final blast opened the Bolungarvik tunnel due to weake sediment layers. For security reasons it was decided to finish the blasting and secure the tunnel ceiling and walls to prevent accidents to the crews.

Only 34 meters left in the Óshlíð tunnel

Today only 30 meters are left of tunnel excavation in the Óshlíð tunnel. On the Bolungarvík site, some 18 meters were blasted last week, bringing the total length at that section to 2.406 meters and on Hnífsdalur site 40 meters were blasted at the same time, bringing the total length at that section to 2.720. Difficult sediments have been delaying the excavation work at the Bolungarvík site but on November 28th the final blast is scheduled bringing the two sections in one. Today 5.126 meters have been blasted or 99.3% of the total tunnel length.

Reykjavik Concert and Conference Centre

On January 12th 2007 the first concrete was casted in the Concert and Conference Centre. Toward the end of November 2009 the plan is to finish the concrete work and put all the effort towards finishing the interior work. Because of this turning point and along with reaching the milestone of hoisting the last steel beam on the roof of the building the owner of the project Portus an Austurhöfn held a ceremony party last week.
