Access tunnel to Kárahnjúka completed under schedule
IPC employees have completed the access tunnel to Kárahnjúka in less time than scheduled in the contract. The work was to be completed by 15th April. It only remains to tidy up and strengthen the tunnel and that will be completed by 10th April.
The so-called access tunnels are from the mouth of the west bank of the river Jökulsár á Dal below the planned land fill at Hafrahvammagljúfra. They are six meters high and six meters wide, about 720 meters long with up to 13.5% slope under the land fill. For comparison, the northern slope of the road to the Hvalfjörður tunnel is about 8%.
