Big steel beams hoisted on the roof of the Concert and Conference Center
This week the big steel beams are being hoisted at the roof of the Concert and conference center in Reykjavík. The steel beams are to support the roof of the main concert hall. The preparation of the assembly for the beams began some time ago. The lower parts of the beams are welded together from 3 – 4 parts with wall thickness up to 50 mm.
Finally all parts of the steel beams are bolted together with total quantity of eleven beams. The largest beam is 36 meters long and 6,8 meters high and it weights 35,4 ton, fully assembled. For the eleven beams seven tons of bolts are used and 23 tons of connections plates.
Three high lifting capacity cranes are used to place the beams in the correct position. Two cranes are used to transport the beams from the assembly area to the lifting area, there a 300 ton crane is used to hoist the beams up to the roof. Nine workers are directly involved with the lifting operation in addition to the crane operators.
