Final blast at Bolungarvik tunnel
The final detonation at the Bolungarvik tunnel was blasted last Saturday by Kristján L. Möller, the Minister of Transport. Some 230 guests were assembled inside the tunnel so security measures had to be very high when the blast went off. In the evening the Ósafl employees, sub-contractors and guests celebrated in the mechanicalworkshop which had been transformed into a very nice club.
Before the blast the Municipality of Bolungarvík and Isafjörður held a public reception at Bolungarvík Sport Centre with speeches and music performances. A celebration cake in the form of the tunnel was made (see photo below) and this cake was in the scale of 1:1000 so it was 51 meter long. High expectations are among the people that live in Bolungarvík and Ísafjörður for the tunnel as the road between these towns can be dangerous during the winter months.
On Sunday there were bus trips offered to the public through the tunnel and there where about 400 people that took the opportunity to observe the tunnel. Ósafl’s construction area was open to visitors and refreshments were offered in the dining hall where one could also see photos and drawings of the project and a rock samples from the tunnel werer on display.
