Helguvík aluminium smelter – first pillars erected
Iceland Prime Contractor employees have begun raising the first pillars for the Helguvík aluminium smelter pot rooms. Each of the 160 pillars is 8 metres high and weighs 22 tonnes. The pillars will be part of the two pot rooms, which will be 26 metres wide and 400 metres long. Each pot room will thus be 10,000 square metres in size.
The foundations for roughly half of the pillars have already been cast, and in the past few weeks, cables have been laid underground and other ground work done. Approximately 75 IPC employees have been working on the project.
