University Square cornerstone laid
At a ceremony held on the 96th anniversary of the University of Iceland, 17 June 2007, the cornerstone was laid for the new University Square complex. In her address at the ceremony, University rector Kristín Ingólfsdóttir said that the new buildings will enable the University to improve vastly the service and support rendered to students.
The cylinder embedded in the cornerstone contains the symbol of the University of Iceland; drawings of the buildings, both printed copies and electronic copies on memory key; and the history of University Square, from the first ideas to the laying of the cornerstone.
Construction of the University Square buildings is on schedule; casting is complete, and the construction of the steel frame is in progress. Levelling of the lot is underway, and in early August the groundwork crew will begin their finishing work. A large portion of the building will be inaugurated at the end of 2007, and the 3rd floor of University Square 2 will be brought into use in February 2008.
